From here, the landscape unfolds in shifting veils of mist that drift across the valleys, while the city lies only fifteen kilometers away and Ho Chi Minh City can be reached within a four-hour journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project began with the faithful reconstruction of traditional wooden stilt houses once inhabited by the Cao Lan people. What emerges is not only a place to rest but also a sanctuary deeply intertwined with the rhythms of nature. Architecture here blends vernacular craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities, creating an environment where wellness and retreat are understood as part of a cultural continuum rather than a fleeting trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cao Lan Hamlet offers more than accommodation. It proposes an experience of stillness and renewal, where design and landscape coalesce into a singular expression. That project nurtured my interest in coffee and in creating environments that connect people with nature. At the same time, more than eleven years working for a German company in the sugar industry gave me the chance to experience the service standards of leading hotels and resorts. Over time, those encounters shaped my sense of aesthetics and hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bao Loc immediately drew me in with its landscape and climate. At first, my family only intended to build a small retreat for ourselves, but as the idea evolved, my passion grew stronger and the project gradually expanded. I collaborated once again with the architect who had designed my previous caf\u00e9, and that continuity gave me confidence that the new endeavor would carry its own distinctive character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cao Lan people originally migrated from the Northeast of Vietnam to new economic zones in the 1980s. When they built new homes, their traditional wooden stilt houses were sold off. I was fortunate to acquire several of these original structures, which I restored and assembled into a small hamlet of five houses. These became the foundation for what is now Cao Lan Hamlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why did you decide to establish the project in Bao Loc rather than elsewhere?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VHT:<\/strong> Between 2009 and 2012, I often traveled to Linh Quy Ph\u00e1p \u1ea4n pagoda for meditation retreats, sometimes staying one or two weeks at a time. The misty weather and the gentle climate here left me with a profound impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I came across this land, property prices in Bao Loc were still far more accessible than in \u0110\u00e0 L\u1ea1t, while also offering strong potential for long-term growth. This philosophy has taught me to see architecture and nature as inseparable. For me, beauty and aesthetics are never apart from the natural world. At Cao Lan Hamlet, every hour of the day reveals a different expression of nature, and when this is embraced through architecture, it gives rise to experiences that feel truly one of a house is far more demanding than building one from the ground up. Old timber is often warped, irregular, and marked by years of use. Yet what makes these houses truly precious is the cultural story embedded in each one. I vividly recall the story of a family who once used their buffaloes to haul timber from the forest. It took two generations of animals to gather enough wood to complete that house. When I heard this, I felt a deep respect for the perseverance of the past. That is why I chose to preserve the natural patina of the wood, without adding glossy finishes, allowing the marks of time to remain visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The site lies about one thousand meters above sea level, and in the past there were no proper roads. Every material had to be transported in small loads by tractor. Finding workers was difficult because most of the local people were occupied with harvesting coffee and durian. During the rainy season, the muddy slopes slowed everything to a crawl. Even so, after two and a half years, the hamlet was complete, with its five stilt houses, a restaurant, and a swimming pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which architectural element at Cao Lan Hamlet do you cherish the most?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VHT:<\/strong> The restaurant\u2019s domed roof holds a special place in my heart. It was built from more than one thousand pieces of reclaimed timber, much of it salvaged from dismantled houses in Saigon and Bao Loc. We could not acquire all of the wood at once. Instead, we placed orders and waited patiently as enough pieces were gathered and delivered. I remember one family who brought their young children. Although there was no playground or amusement park in the usual sense, the children were enchanted by simply wandering through nature. Later, they even wrote down their impressions in heartfelt notes. It is moments like these that reassure me the project is following its true course.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>If you were to share a message with guests who come to experience Cao Lan Hamlet, what would you hope they feel?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VHT:<\/strong> I prefer not to impose a fixed message on this place, as that would make it feel limiting. I simply live and create in a way that feels true to me: staying close to nature, moving at a slower rhythm, and allowing each person who comes here to shape their own experience. When guests arrive at Cao Lan Hamlet, they encounter the architecture, the surrounding greenery, and the way of life that unfolds here. Together, these elements naturally bring a sense of peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also avoid speaking too much about meditation, yoga, or the idea of slow living in grand terms, because I am still on my own path of learning. What matters most is to live authentically with my choices, to build a place that is green, clean, and respectful of nature. That authenticity, I believe, becomes the message in itself.
